About CitizenReady UK

A free, independent study companion for the people the Life in the UK test is actually for.

Why we built this site

Every year more than 150,000 people sit the Life in the UK citizenship test, the final hurdle on the path to Indefinite Leave to Remain or to British nationality. Almost everyone we know who has taken the test has paid for at least one of the paid practice apps that dominate the App Store and the Google Play search results. Most of those apps cost between £2 and £15, lock the most useful tests behind a subscription, and bombard candidates with low-quality advertising in between questions.

We could not see a good reason for any of that. The official handbook is publicly available, the question bank has been mirrored as open source on GitHub for over a decade, and the test format is well documented on gov.uk. CitizenReady UK is our attempt to package the same material in a calm, fast, free, mobile-friendly website that respects your time and never asks for your email address.

Where the questions come from

Every question on this site is drawn from a publicly available open-source mirror of the official handbook question bank — specifically the maxwellito/life-in-the-uk repository on GitHub, which compiles questions from the Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents 3rd edition handbook published by the Home Office. We do not modify the wording of questions or invent new ones; we organise them into the same five chapters used by the handbook so candidates can study by topic.

Who is behind CitizenReady UK

CitizenReady UK is a small, independent volunteer project. It is not affiliated with the Home Office, with any official test provider, or with any commercial revision app. The team includes former candidates who have themselves passed the Life in the UK test as part of applications for Indefinite Leave to Remain or British citizenship. We know first-hand how stressful the wider immigration process is and we want this one part of it to feel manageable.

How the site is funded

The site is funded entirely by display advertising served via Google AdSense in the four reserved slots you can see at the top, sidebar, in-content and footer of every page. We do not run pop-ups, interstitials or video pre-rolls, and we never sell user data because we do not collect any. There is no account system; nothing you do here is tied to a user profile.

Improvements and corrections

The handbook is updated by the Home Office every few years, and we re-run our data pipeline whenever the open-source mirror is refreshed. If you spot a typo, a question with the wrong indicated answer, or an explanation that does not match the current handbook, please let us know. We aim to fix issues within a few days.

What this site is not

CitizenReady UK is a study aid. It cannot give you legal advice on your visa, file your application for you, or guarantee you a pass on the real exam. For legal advice you should speak to a qualified immigration solicitor or an OISC-regulated immigration adviser. For booking and official guidance please visit gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test.
