Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions we receive from candidates preparing for the Life in the UK test. If your question is not answered here, please get in touch.

What is the Life in the UK test?

The Life in the UK test is a computer-based exam set by the Home Office that anyone applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain or British Citizenship must pass. It is built around the official handbook "Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents" (3rd edition) and tests your knowledge of British history, traditions, values, and the way the UK is governed.

How many questions are on the real exam and how long does it last?

You will be asked 24 multiple-choice questions and you have 45 minutes to answer them. Most candidates finish in around 20 minutes, but the time pressure on the real day catches many people out, which is why we publish timed mock tests that mirror the official format.

What is the pass mark?

You need to answer at least 18 of the 24 questions correctly — that is 75%. Anything less is recorded as a fail and you must wait at least 7 days before booking a re-sit. There is no limit on the number of attempts but each attempt currently costs £50.

Where do CitizenReady UK questions come from?

Every question on this site is drawn from a publicly available, open-source mirror of the official handbook question bank (maxwellito/life-in-the-uk on GitHub). The wording, options and explanations follow the structure of the official 3rd edition handbook so the practice you do here is directly relevant to the real exam.

Are the practice questions exactly the same as the real test?

The Home Office does not publish the live exam questions. Our bank reproduces the same topics, the same multiple-choice format, and the same depth of detail used in the real exam, so candidates who score consistently above 90% on our timed mocks almost always pass on the day.

Do I need to memorise the whole 180-page handbook?

No. The exam tests recall of facts, names, dates, and concepts that appear in chapters 2 to 5 of the handbook. Chapter 1 (the application process) is not testable. Our study guide is organised into the same five chapters so you know exactly what to focus on.

How long should I study before booking my test?

Most candidates spend two to four weeks of part-time study. We suggest reading each chapter of our study guide once, attempting the matching practice tests, then doing two or three timed mocks per day in the final week. If you score 22/24 or higher on three consecutive mocks you are ready to book.

How do I book the official Life in the UK test?

You can book at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. The test costs £50 and is held at one of around 30 official Life in the UK test centres across the United Kingdom. You must book at least 3 days in advance and bring acceptable photo ID plus proof of address from the last 3 months.

What ID do I need to bring on test day?

You must bring one form of photographic ID — usually a current passport, biometric residence permit, EU/EEA national ID card or UK driving licence — plus proof of your current address dated within the last 3 months. If your ID and your booking details do not match exactly you will be turned away.

Is CitizenReady UK affiliated with the Home Office?

No. CitizenReady UK is an independent free study site. We are not affiliated with the Home Office, the UK Visas and Immigration department, or any official test provider. We exist to make high-quality preparation accessible at no cost.

Still not sure?

The official Home Office page at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test is the authoritative source for booking, fees and acceptable forms of identification. For study questions, our free study guide is the quickest way to fill in any gaps in your knowledge.
