St Valentine's Day, April Fool's Day and Halloween

Three secular celebrations widely marked across the UK, even though none is a public holiday.

St Valentine's Day on 14 February is when partners exchange cards, flowers and chocolates. The cards are often signed anonymously, especially when sent to a person the sender admires from a distance. April Fool's Day on 1 April is the day for harmless practical jokes, traditionally only until midday. Newspapers and broadcasters often publish spoof stories.

Halloween on 31 October has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian All Saints' Eve. Children dress up in costumes and go from door to door asking "trick or treat?". Pumpkins are carved into faces with candles inside (jack-o'-lanterns).

You may be asked the date of Valentine's Day (14 February), or what people do on Halloween (dress up and go trick-or-treating).
