Looking After Yourself and Your Family

Why the handbook lists looking after children and dependent relatives among the duties of citizenship.

The handbook lists "looking after yourself and your family" as one of the responsibilities of every UK resident. In practical terms this means making sure children attend school between the ages of 5 and 16, registering births, ensuring children receive medical and dental care, and providing a stable home environment.

Some duties are legal. It is a criminal offence in England, Scotland and Wales to leave a young child unattended in a way that puts them at risk; failing to send a child to school can lead to fines or prosecution; parents are also expected to keep their children out of trouble with the law. Adult relatives may have a legal duty to support a spouse or to provide for children after a divorce.

The exam may ask the school-leaving age (16 in England, with most young people now expected to stay in education or training to 18), or which responsibilities the handbook places on parents.
